Scientists Link Gene Mutation to Autism Risk
Teams of scientists working independently have for the first time identified several gene mutations that they agree sharply increase the chances that a child will develop autism. They have found further evidence that the risk increases with the age of the parents, particularly in fathers over age 35.
Senator calls on FDA for safety review of caffeinated energy drinks
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., called on the FDA to investigate the safety of caffeinated energy drinks. Durbin pointed to the case of a 14-year-old girl who died of cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity after consuming a large quantity of energy drinks within a 24-hour period. The agency has "the authority to limit the level of caffeine and require the manufacturers to provide scientific evidence that ingredients such as guarana, taurine and ginseng are safe for their intended use and in combination with caffeine and other energy drink ingredients," Durbin wrote in a letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg.
Antibiotics May Be Enough for Appendicitis
For uncomplicated appendicitis, using antibiotics first may preclude the need to remove the appendix and reduce complications, a meta-analysis suggested.
